Geelong Convention and Events Centre (GCEC) - Construction update - Waterfront

Starts 22/08/2023, finishes 31/12/2026

The Nyaal Banyul GCEC precinct will include the construction of the purpose-built convention and exhibition space, incorporating a 1000 seat venue, two large exhibition spaces, meeting rooms, conference facilities and flexible event spaces.

As this precinct is in such close proximity to the Waterfront Campus, we will be providing monthly updates on construction works.

Streetscape works

  • Landscaping will continue on all precinct street frontages, including the future public plaza on the corner of Western Beach Rd and Gheringhap Street and the space on the corner of Cavendish Street and Smythe Street through to September 2025.

  • Works will include civil, earth and structural works, along with the installation of an upgraded stormwater system.

  • The shuttle bus stop will be relocated to drop-off on Brougham Street during this time, as traffic will be rerouted to Little Smythe Street.

  • The following changes to vehicle and pedestrian access will apply to facilitate these works:

    • Gheringhap Street will be closed to vehicles and street parking between Western Beach Road and Smythe Street until the end of July. Pedestrian access and Deakin entry on the eastern side will be maintained.

    • The shuttle bus stop will be relocated to drop-off on Brougham Street during this time, as traffic will be rerouted to Little Smythe Street until the end of July.

    • A work zone will be established on Cavendish Street between Western Beach Road and Smythe Street, resulting in a loss of street parking for the duration of the works. Two-way traffic thoroughfare will be maintained.

    • Works along Western Beach Road and Smythe Street will be performed within the construction zones already established, with no change to traffic or pedestrian thoroughfare.

    • The majority of the works along Smythe Street will be performed within the existing construction zone maintaining one-way traffic. Stormwater works on the eastern end of Smythe Street will require road closure between Little Smythe Street and Gheringhap Street untill end of July with a traffic detour along Little Smythe Street.

    • Construction street signage and traffic management will be in place.
