Unit SRA215 builds on the history, skills and concepts learned in SRA143 Art and Society and prepares the foundation for learning in SRA323 Contemporary Architecture. Architecture and urban design projects reveal a dynamic modernisation that evolved in the period 1750 to 1950. Three major historical themes - colonization, the industrial revolution and the rise of the bourgeoisie after the French revolution - underpin the making of the modern world. New types of buildings including factories, worker and country houses, museums, opera houses, and new types of urbanisms, railway stations, ports, cities, manifest change. Expansion of the European model will be examined in parallel with the diverse histories of architecture and places.
