Scheduled learning activities - online:

Online learning experiences are via CloudDeakin including a 1 x 1-hour class per week (recordings provided) and an interactive 1-hour online seminar. An online forum will also be maintained and students will be expected to engage.

Content

The unit examines Australian Aboriginal holistic approaches to Social and Emotional Health, Healing and Wellbeing. Theoretical frameworks for health and healing will contextualise the initial and ongoing impact of colonisation on Aboriginal peoples' social and emotional health. Exploring the broadest determinants of health, this unit emphasises the need for community and individual health to be understood as interdependent and holistic, connected to the land and incorporating the past and the future.

The critical role of Australian Aboriginal healing programs and 'place-based' decolonising strategies will be analysed with examples of effective trauma, substance abuse, mental health programs and other current initiatives. Current approaches to health and healing will be examined through the lens of Community, Women's and Men's health and healing, including alternative medicines, plants and healing practices.
