Learning experiences and assessment activities in this unit require that students have access to specific computing equipment, such as single board computers, microcontrollers and sensors. The expected cost of this equipment for this unit is $200. Students will be informed at the start of the unit if loan equipment is available, or if they will be required to purchase it.

Content

This unit provides deep and practical understanding of advanced embedded systems in the context of technology development. It builds on the learning and experiences of SIT123: Data capture technologies and SIT210: Embedded systems development.  Students will take their learning beyond simple embedded boards and sensor devices, to understanding, working with and designing full System on Chip (SoC) platforms. Students will learn and experience prototyping hardware solutions using the Verilog and VHDL hardware description languages, and field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) hardware platforms.  Students will also work with GPU technologies and understand how these can be used to accelerate some tasks in high-performance embedded applications. With these platforms, students will work towards developing modern embedded system prototypes that satisfy the requirements of challenging embedded applications.
