Content

Expressing connection to place and land is a powerful human experience. The interpretation of meaning from one generation to the next is also a tradition practiced by all people and cultures. Compelling and transformative interpretation can bring to diverse audiences new ways of understanding spiritual connection between place and culture. It can also reveal untold narratives and histories that can enrich and inform contemporary understanding and significance of cultural landscapes. Interpretation as a practice, also offers a recognised skill base regularly used in the broad and varied arena of Land and Sea Country management. Designing effective interpretive narratives and media can act to re-interpret history, dispel misrepresentations and bring forth new knowledge and perspectives. In recognising the many different ways of seeing and knowing, this unit explores the important role and skill of interpretation not only as a continuing conversation across knowledge systems but also as a powerful way to inform, educate and ultimately lead to a wiser understanding of Country as a whole. The unit examines the concept of cultural landscapes, the articulation of significance and the principles of transformative interpretation. You will write about your own cultural landscape, critically analyse contemporary interpretative media and ultimately, design and present your own cultural interpretation of a place significant to yourself and your community. From undertaking these tasks, you will acquire a toolkit of interpretative skills that will enhance your presentation experience and heighten your critical lens.
