Content

Focusing on Years 11 and 12, Teaching English: Senior Years builds on the research-based practical skills of being a secondary subject English teacher developed in Teaching English: Middle Years (ECL761). While the range of senior secondary English subject options (English, English Language, and English Literature) are explored, the focus is on the overarching study design of senior English, with the current Victorian Certificate of Education English study design used as the example. Importantly, pre-service teachers are taught to approach this work as a member of the subject English teaching community working in a senior school English team. Pre-service teachers learn how to bring this study design to life in the classroom, through learning research informed pedagogical practices, lesson planning skills, and assessment, moderation, and evaluation practices. In developing the artistry of subject English teaching, pre-service teachers utilise their knowledge of literature studies and linguistics to develop their pedagogical approach. This includes dialogic approaches to the senior English classroom, the teaching of reading and exploring texts, critical thinking and exploring argument, and creating and crafting texts.

Models of assessment and reporting will be examined including external examination processes in subject English and internal moderation requirements for external assessments. Pre-service teachers study how to teach and assess the range of textual requirements of VCE English including public speaking, multiple genres of writing, audio, and visual compositions. Socio-economic and external issues around senior subject English and the external examination processes are examined, as well as approaches to working in a senior school English team. Pre-service teachers develop their identities as Years 11 and 12 English teachers and are encouraged to come to an understanding of their own views and beliefs and how they align with the current requirements.
