This unit considers creative nonfiction, from lyric essay to personal journalism as modes of inquiry into contemporary events and experiences. Through reading and analysis, students develop an understanding of the genre and where it sits in the present media and publication landscape. In seminars, writing exercises and workshops focus on pertinent elements of craft such as persona, structure and research, and key concepts such as memory and ethics. Students will be encouraged to take risks and experiment as they represent the truth in imaginative and compelling ways.
