Content

This unit will examine three major themes in gender, sexuality and literature from the nineteenth century to the present: feminism, homosexuality and contemporary controversies in representations of gender and sexuality. The unit’s examination of these central themes will enable students to critically reflect on a wide variety of literary engagements with gender and sexuality, including representations of masculinity, heterosexuality, families and love. Beginning with a focus on historical representations of gender and sexuality in Anglophone writing from the nineteenth century, this unit will study key figures and texts in feminist and queer literature. Through a critical reflection on these canonical formations, the unit will engage theoretical resources from feminist, queer and postcolonial studies to examine questions of class, race and ability. The unit is taught and assessed through an interdisciplinary approach to studying literature, drawing on archival, historical and cultural resources.
