Content
This unit examines fantasy literature through a study of texts across a broad historical period. It aims to bring together adult and children's fantasy to explore how these two genres operate. It introduces students to the literary fantastic through texts such as Frankenstein, "Carmilla" and The Turn of the Screw as well as contemporary fantasy literatures like The Daylight Gate, Coraline and Northern Lights. Students will explore the relationship between fantasy texts and historical anxieties surrounding sexual transgression, madness, race and the death of God. Students will learn to read fantasy texts through theoretically informed frameworks and encourages students to think critically about the importance of the fantastic in literature.
