Content

This unit focuses on photographic narrative and visual storytelling in the context of contemporary art practice, photobooks and social documentary. Students undertake a number of individual exercises working towards the development of a group documentary project. Students will also present a research paper reflecting issues and ideas discussed in classes and seminars. Working methods and equipment choice will be dictated by the project and students may choose from a range of camera formats including digital and analogue, colour and black and white. Emphasis is placed on exploring presentation techniques, sequencing, image installation and fine art papers. Critique sessions will be held regularly to discuss work in progress and offer feedback to students.

Photo Essay 30%, individual assessment, 1200 word equivalent

Research Presentation 20%, individual assessment, 800 word equivalent

Documentary photo essay 50%, group assessment, 2000 word equivalent
