WELCOME
Welcome to the unit EEE726 Digital learning, Design and Assessment.
This unit guide outlines the aims of the unit, covers the broad topics around digital learning to be studied and describes the assessment requirements. The unit guide first is a useful resource for tracking the progress of the unit, reminding yourself of the unit learning outcomes, and it is also useful when preparing to study or embark on an assignment.
I hope you will enjoy the challenges of digital learning design and assessment as much as I do, and that your learning here is rewarding and stimulating.
Please note that your first and principal access to this unit will be through FutureLearn. Each assessment item has its own introduction step and its own submission step. These steps are well sign-posted, including a link to the CloudDeakin site where you will submit your assessments.
This Unit Guide provides you with the key information about this Unit. For the best chance of success, you should read it very carefully and refer to it frequently throughout the trimester. Your Unit site (accessed in DeakinSync) also provides information about your rights and responsibilities - we will assume you have read this before the Unit commences, and we expect you to refer to it throughout the trimester.

This unit examines principles and theories of digital learning, including the role of digital technologies in contemporary educational contexts. A broad range of digital learning strategies are presented through case studies to analyse how these approaches are aligned with learning outcomes, assessment and learning activities. Specific attention is given to the use of digital learning strategies that promote active, equitable and personally engaging learning experiences for learners from diverse backgrounds. Participants are asked to design and reflect on a digital learning intervention for their own professional context which demonstrates their understanding of relevant educational theories. Participants reflect on their own practice and also provide peer feedback to other participants enrolled in the unit, in order to develop critical thinking and evaluative judgement skills.
Unit development in response to student feedback
Every trimester, we ask students to tell us, through eVALUate, what helped and hindered their learning in each unit. You are strongly encouraged to provide constructive feedback for this unit when eVALUate opens (you will be emailed a link).
In order to continuously improve and develop the course, all students will be asked to give feedback during and at the end of trimester (e.g. eVALUate). Please contribute your feedback when given the opportunity, as it will be invaluable in improving the experience of current and future students.
If you have any concerns about the unit during the trimester please contact the unit teaching team - preferably early in the trimester - so we can discuss your concerns, and make adjustments, if appropriate.

Each Deakin course has course learning outcomes which explain what the Deakin Learning Outcomes mean in your discipline. Learning in each unit builds towards the course learning outcomes.
Your Unit Learning Outcomes
Each unit in your course is a building block towards these Graduate Learning Outcomes - not all units develop and assess every Graduate Learning Outcome (GLO).
| These are the Learning Outcomes (ULO) for this Unit At the completion of this unit students can: | Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes |
ULO1 | identify approaches to digital learning that are critically informed by evidence from research and professional practice | 1, 4 |
ULO2 | analyse digital learning interventions in relation to learning design principles and relevant standards | 1, 4 |
ULO3 | apply advanced knowledge of digital learning theories, platforms, and applications to develop appropriate digital learning interventions including aligned learning outcomes, learning activities and assessment tasks | 1, 3, 5 |
ULO4 | reflect on digital learning theories and learning needs to construct and provide feedback on a personal professional practice action plan | 2, 4, 6 |
Assessment 1 (Individual) - Digital Learning intervention plan (2500 words or equivalent) - 50%
Assessment 2 (Individual, with Group Component) - Professional practice action plan (2500 words or equivalent) - 50%
Summative assessment
(tasks that will be graded or marked)
NOTE: It is your responsibility to keep a backup copy of every assignment where it is possible (eg written/digital reports, essays, videos, images). In the unusual event that one of your assignments is misplaced, you will need to submit the backup copy. Any work you submit may be checked by electronic or other means for the purposes of detecting collusion and/or plagiarism.
When you are required to submit an assignment through CloudDeakin (accessed in DeakinSync), you should receive an email to your Deakin email address confirming that it has been submitted. You should check that you can see your assignment in the Submissions view of the Assignment folder after upload, and check for, and keep, the email receipt for the submission.
- Summative assessment task 1
| (Individual) - Digital Learning intervention plan |
Brief description of assessment task | This first assessment task requires participants to prepare a plan of a digital learning intervention that they will implement in their future practice. To complete this assessment task, participants will:
|
Detail of student output | Digital learning intervention plan, 2500 words or equivalent (Form of assignment can be experimental or conventional in nature, e.g. written essay, video, illustrated web formats, etc. Participants are encouraged to use writing forms unique to the web so as to experiment with and leverage alternative ways of presenting scholarly work in a digital environment.) |
Grading and weighting (% total mark for unit) | 50% |
Method for ensuring comparability of assessment | Single-marker assessment using marking rubric. Moderation of extreme results. |
This task assesses your achievement of these Unit Learning Outcome(s) | ULO1: Identify approaches to digital learning that are critically informed by evidence from research and professional practice. ULO2: Analyse digital learning interventions in relation to learning design principles and relevant standards. ULO3: Apply advanced knowledge of digital learning theories, platforms and applications to develop appropriate digital learning interventions, including aligned learning outcomes, learning activities and assessment tasks. |
This task assesses your achievement of these Graduate Learning Outcome(s) | GLO1: Discipline knowledge and capabilities GLO3: Digital literacy GLO4: Critical thinking GLO5: Problem-solving |
How and when you will receive feedback on your work | Students can expect feedback on each summative task in time to help them improve for the subsequent assessment. Students can also make an appointment to get feedback. |
When and how to submit your work | Due date: Monday 16th December at 17:00 (AEDT) Students are required to submit their assessment online via FutureLearn by the due date and time. |
- Summative assessment task 2
| (Individual, with Group Component) - Professional practice action plan |
Brief description of assessment task | Prepare a reflective professional practice plan that incorporates advanced investigation of a digital learning theory. By selecting and further investigating one of the theories/topics explored in the unit, participants will reflect on and link the theory with their current and future professional practice in an action plan. To complete this assessment task, participants will:
|
Detail of student output | Professional practice action plan, 2500 words or equivalent (the format of the assessment can be experimental or conventional in nature, e.g. written essay, video, illustrated web formats, etc. Participants are encouraged to use writing forms unique to the web so as to experiment with and leverage alternative ways of presenting scholarly work in a digital environment). Participants will be required to review the work of other learners and to incorporate feedback received from their peers into their final action plan. |
