Educator-facilitated (scheduled) learning activities - online unit enrolment:

Online independent and collaborative learning including 10 x 3 hour online lectures per trimester.

Typical study commitment:

Students will on average spend 150 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Content

Integrating study and work experience in a systematic way is essential for forging close links between the university education process and the workplace. In this unit, students will have the opportunity to gain professional work experience with a course-related host organisation, approved by the unit chair for a minimum of 80 hours to a maximum of 160 hours. Through a combination of preparatory classes and a work placement, students will develop generic, employability skills that prepare them for work, and a career in their chosen fields.

There are many benefits to both students and employers from undertaking relevant work placements during study. Learning and assessment activities in this unit will help students to develop an appreciation for work-life, and to make decisions about personal, professional and career development. Most importantly, it will provide students with evidence of relevant experience and skills when applying for future work.

Work-Integrated Learning

Work-integrated learning activities within this unit provide you with an opportunity to develop work-related skills while you study.

Students should have completed their second year of study prior to commencing placement.

To be eligible to study this unit, students will first be required to source and secure a placement opportunity with an appropriate host organisation; submit an application with the SEBE WIL Team (through InPlace) and have it approved. Hours completed at the placement organisation prior to the approval of your placement, cannot be counted towards SLE301. Students must contact a student adviser prior to considering enrolment in this unit to obtain an updated course map and ensure they meet the pre-enrolment and course requirements.

Placements for this unit can be undertaken once the placement has been approved and a student is enrolled (from 1st September in the year before the unit coursework commences), however must be completed by the end of week 10 of the enrolled trimester.

Students selecting SLE301 Professional Practice as part of their Global Engagement minor, please note that the placement component of this unit must be completed in an international setting.

Delays in completing the placement could mean that the course will take longer to complete than the stated duration. Attendance at the placement may be required outside the trimester dates.

In preparation for the placement, students are required to complete the Placement Preparation Module (PPM) before commencing their professional experience (placement). During the trimester students will undertake the online teaching, learning and assessment activities for the unit outside of professional experience (placement) hours.

Hurdle requirement

To be eligible to obtain a pass in this unit students must complete a minimum of 80 hours (maximum of 160 hours) of professional experience (placement) to the satisfaction of the host organisation (as per AT3), by the end of week 10.

Unit Fee Information

Fees and charges vary depending on the type of fee place you hold, your course, your commencement year, the units you choose to study and their study discipline, and your study load.
