Content
This unit explores how education and institutional environments are impacted by policy and discourse that shapes how we understand culture and diversity, as well as defines who is welcome, who belongs, and why. Using a strengths-based approach that values and celebrates diversity, students will participate in interactive activities online and on campus to unpack how diverse intersectional identities such as gender, sexuality, ability, age, religion, and socioeconomic background influence culture and everyday experiences. Students will address barriers to social justice by critically examining what it means to "include". Throughout the trimester students are encouraged to ask critical questions arising from a variety of pedagogical interactions, the arts and popular culture, critical theory and policy, to consider how we participate in both formal and informal educational spaces. At the end of the unit students will have developed have knowledge and experience that will be beneficial beyond the unit, in their planned professional practice. This includes reflective practice, giving and receiving feedback, intercultural understanding, critical and creative thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The assignment will support and evidence their learning by designing engaging, inclusive pedagogical resources that addresses and dismantle barriers to social justice for diverse communities and individuals.
