Freedom of speech is a central tenet of democracy. Today tweeting, facebook and texting means that anyone anywhere can comment on anything at anytime. This omnipresence of the people’s voice is impacting political movements and social change. Many are now starting up businesses with a social or environmental mandate – and building community support for their efforts via social media. Or are they? Deakin Art Gallery (Melbourne Burwood Campus)
The singular and yet ordinary image of a hammer, left casually atop a plinth, inspired a profound change in the art and thinking of Robert Hague. This simple hammer, appearing to usurp an unmade sculpture, rich in metaphor and replete with a history of creation and destruction was to become a path from abstraction to appropriation and the conceptual. This exhibition includes models, prints and sculpture from a 10 year period and describes the artist's journey of experimentation and reflection.

It’s an election year and this free forum will bring Melbourne and Canberra together in a heady discussion on the power of the human voice and Australian democracy in a global context. Academics in Canberra tackle the rich content of the Arab Springs, while representatives from Melbourne’s Greek, Indian Somali and Burmese communities provide a rare insight into democracy on the ground in Melbourne. Including a live cross from Melbourne to a Centenary of Canberra forum at the National Press Club.

Barwon Health Drug and Alcohol Services facilitate 'Making Changes' - an ongoing therapeutic recovery group for people healing from alcohol and other drug addictions. Art Therapy is used as part of the therapeutic processes of the group. These processes provide insight into the difficult journey individuals undertake on the road to recovery.
