Students will on average spend 300 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

Scheduled learning activities - online:

Students are required to complete a placement with an approved organisation. Placements will be for a minimum of 12 weeks to a maximum of 24 weeks full time. To accommodate students undertaking longer placements, a maximum of two consecutive enrolments may be undertaken.  Students are required to complete the Placement Preparation Module (previously titled Ready: WIL Placement Induction module), in the unit site, before commencing their placement, and undertake the online teaching, learning and assessment activities for the unit outside of placement hours.

To be eligible to study this unit, students will be required to source, apply, and secure a placement opportunity.

In preparation for the placement, students will complete pre-placement activities that aims to: ensure they are work-ready (what to expect, managing risks and challenges etc.); use reflective practice on the job; navigate the assessment requirements; and finalise their placement goals.

Note also that delays in completing the placement could mean that the course will take longer to complete than the stated duration. Attendance at the placement may be required outside the trimester dates.

Content

Integrating study and work experience is essential for forging close links between university education and the workplace. Students will gain professional work experience with an approved host organisation in this unit. The exact nature, activities, and emphasis in each industry placement will vary according to the context, resources, and expertise of staff and the student's experience, qualities, and aspirations. Industry experiences will allow students to learn about and with an organisation. In addition, students will critically reflect on their role as IT professionals, bringing together everything they have learnt in their course to demonstrate achievement of Course and Graduate Learning Outcomes and their readiness for professional work. Learning and assessment activities in this unit will help students appreciate work-life and make decisions about personal and professional development. Most importantly, it will provide relevant evidence when applying for future work.

The assessment due weeks provided may change. The Unit Chair will clarify the exact assessment requirements, including the due date, at the start of the teaching period.

Hurdle requirement

To be eligible to obtain a pass in this unit, students must meet certain milestones as part of the portfolio and demonstrate that they are working to the satisfaction of the host organisation (including skill competency levels, professional code of conduct and project output requirements) at both the mid and end of placement. More specifically, both mid and end placement reviews need to be deemed ‘satisfactory’ by your supervisor to achieve the pass level.
